Clay animations are one of the many forms of stop motion animation. The animated pieces used, either it being the character or background, are able to be molded by the animator into any shape the animator chooses. Plasticine clay is usually used because it is made of a malleable substance.
To start creating a Claymation animation , you need to start molding the Plasticine clay into the character of your desire but it’s better to start with something called a Morph. A Morph is an animated Plasticine stop-motion character that has similarities to a human. To do this take so of your Plasticine clay and for a sphere with it, then begin to mold the ball into a cylindrical shape, this first piece will be used as the upper body or torso of your morph. From there you start to mold the head by trying to round off the top, take note that it is important to mold the whole body in one single piece so that your morph will be stable. For the arms and legs begin to stretch out the Plasticine about half an inch from the body, make sure that the arms and legs are of decent length so that your Morph will be able to stand up properly.
Three Movies and Three TV Shows that used Claymation to produce the full product are:
Movies:
Chicken Run
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Wallace and Gromit
TV Shows:
Pingu
Shaun the Sheep
Robot Chicken
Now I’ll be discussing the strengths and weaknesses of using Claymation.
The strengths and advantages of using clay models for instance they can be made to scale for example a small clay model can be used where filming space is limited for example a cityscape set where tall building can be just a meter high.
The weaknesses and disadvantages of using clay models fine movement is hard to achieve unless the model is made with ball joints. They also require high maintenance depending to the heat of the lighting because it dries them out.
The Claymation animation I did was about two morphs playing tug of war. One of the problems I had with this project was that the Plasticine clay rope kept cutting in half so it was a tedious job, the editing wasn't so hard because i've had experience with these kinds of editing software.
